Abstract : Fiber optic systems are important telecommunication infrastructure for world-wide broadband networks. Wide bandwidth
signal transmission with low delay is a key requirement in present day applications. Optical fibers provide enormous and
unsurpassed transmission bandwidth with negligible latency, and are now the transmission medium of choice for long
distance and high data rate transmission in telecommunication networks. One of the primary limitations in optical
communication is attenuation, which will affect the transmission distance of the optical signal. This is overcome by using
all-optical amplifiers. A novel approach of designing a hybrid amplifier with a combination of a single mode (SM) erbium
ytterbium co-doped fibre amplifier (EYDFA) and a discrete Raman amplifier (RA) is analyzed to flatten its gain over the
optical spectrum of the C and L bands. The amplifier with 110*40 Gb∕s non-return-to-zero dense wavelength division
multiplexed (DWDM) signals as the input is simulated using Optisystem simulation software. Different combinations of
input is simulated and analyzed for BER, OSNR, Optical Power and Eye diagrams. The simulation is performed with five
pumping signals for RA and EYDFA. The performance of the amplifier in forward, backward, and both forward and
backward schemes are analyzed for maximum gain, noise figure and OSNR. This communication system finds use in cable
television or community antenna television (CATV) and telecommunication networks satisfy the increased number of user
demands in the local area network (LAN) and offer uniform amplification to the cable TV or fiber to the home DWDM
optical communication signals over the L and C bands.
High data rates can be achieved using DWDM technology over optical fiber. Optical signals having different frequencies are
modulated in DWDM system and then these signals are multiplexed into a single stream of light that is sent over optical
fiber cable. Here, DWDM system performance is being compared under different modulation formats (NRZ, RZ, and CSRZ)
and at different power levels.
For the comparative study 16 data channels are taken through which signals are being transmitted. The various components
that have been used here are EDFA, dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) of length 14 km along with single mode fiber
(SMF) of length 86 km. System is operating at 10 Gbps with link length of 86 km at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The effective
modulation format which will effectively increase the system performance without a change in previous design is presented.
The system performance is evaluated on the basis of Quality factor (Q-factor) and Bit Error Rate (BER). The performance of
system provides acceptable result with CSRZ modulation with much-reduced BER and increase in Quality Factor (Q-factor).
DWDM system is designed and simulated on Optisytem software provided by Optiwave.
