Application of Static Frequency Converter on High Power Short Circuit Alternator – An Intelligent Step towards Energy Efficiency Measure

Abstract
This paper deals with a specially designed high power alternator, used in a short circuit test laboratory in Central Power Research Institute, Bhopal. The said short circuit alternator earlier driven by a synchronous motor is presently working without any physically coupled prime mover. This single machine popularly known as motor-less alternator is operable in dual mode (motor or generator) which is achieved with two static devices named static frequency converter (SFC) and static excitation system (SES). The paper discusses different modes of operation of the short circuit alternator e.g. motor mode, generator mode and braking mode. Most beneficial feature of this motor-less alternator is its operational flexibility and energy saving aspects. Techniques adopted to gain this maximum energy savings is also highlighted in this paper.
